Times Are Changing by Todd Ukena
(snare drum solo)

The tempo for this piece is “Allegretto.”  (The eighth note pulse = 162 – 180)

As the title suggests there are numerous meter signature changes throughout this piece, (sometimes every measure.)  Switching the beat pulse from two to three is an important skill for reading much of the new literature that is available.  Having it appear in a rigid framework makes it a little easier to work with.

The meter signatures used follow a set pattern in organizing the 8th note subdivision.

5/8 = 3+2

7/8 = 3+2+2

10/8 = 3+3+2+2

11/8 = 3+3+3+2

12/8 = 3+3+2+2+2

Keep the eighth note pulse constant throughout the piece.

The overall form is A B A’ B’ A” B” with the inner form of the A section being A A’ and the inner form for the B section is A B A’.

With the constant meter changes in the A section the beat should feel a bit disjointed.  However the B section should feel like a quick waltz (with a hitch in it's giddyup!)

Play all rolls as open (double bounce rolls).   Prepare the stick position for flams the note before they are to be played.
