Tempest by Todd Ukena
(two mallet marimba solo)

This solo has its inspirations from “Fantasy on Japanese Woodprints” by Alan Hovhannes.  The overall form for this piece is A B A’.  Looking into the form measure by you will find abac, abab, abab’, etc.  Looking further into the form of the phrases shows a little larger form, ABAC.  Recognizing these smaller forms makes the solo easy to learn and memorize.

Controlling the roll speed and tempo at the end of middle section is great for creating and releasing tension.  (As the player speed up, increase the roll pulse speed; as the tempo slows, decrease the speed of the roll pulse.)

Typographical errors:  The last note in measures 18, 20, 88 and 90 should be a D flat rather than an F.

Use alternating sticking beginning with the left hand for the first two measures unless otherwise indicated.

Indicated sticking for measures 3-9 allow accents to be played easily.

Sticking for measure 10 should be used for all measures following until measure 21.

Performer may use sticking indicated at measure 21 or may choose to use the previous measure’s sticking.

Use alternating sticking beginning with the right hand in measures 25-28 unless otherwise indicated.

Use alternating sticking beginning with the left hand in measures 29-48.

Tenuto accents are to be played with a greater stick angle to achieve more tone and less attack.

Any notes under brackets are to be played near the nodes of the bars.

Start at measure 73 quite slowly and accelerate into measure 79.

From measure 79 to the end is to be played as fast as possible without losing the sixteenth note pulse.
