No. II (No. 2) Funk by Todd Ukena
(timpani solo)

This solo was written after the drum set solo, Funk No. 2 was completed. The idea came from a performance of the solo, “Timpiana” accompanied by drum set.  It was a great performance to see and hear!  Now if you can have a duet with timpani and drum set with one solo, why not another?  Hence, the creation of No. II Funk.  Both pieces can be played as solos without any problem.  They can work together as a duet as well though.

Following the rhythm scheme of the Funk no. 2 was easy enough.  The drum set part lent itself to a great theme and melody for the timpani.

Working out a sticking that is comfortable to the player while keeping the notes clean and articulate is the only concern for the melody at letter A.

For the most part tuning changes occur while the playing so that the performer can make adjustments while playing.   There is one place where the performer has two counts to change pitches (Right before letter E, B flat down to an F.)   This can be handled by tuning the bottom pitch, (no tension,) of the large drum to an F.  (I personally do not have a problem with doing relative tuning.  Whatever pitch is the fundamental for the large drum will work fine as the tonic.  Change the other pitches in relation to keep the intervals correct.

Though the tempo says 108-120, I prefer the slower time of 108 (or maybe a wee bit slower.)  I feel a good funky beat works better at a slower tempo.
