Lauren’s
Lullaby
by Todd Ukena
Marimba solo (four mallet)
The melody for this solo came from a melody
that was sung to my daughter when she was little. (Sometimes
it worked to help her sleep!) The words sung were never the
same twice. Here’s one version that fit the melody.
“Go to sleep, little girl, go to sleep, this fine night.
All is calm, all is clear, close your eyes through the night.”
“Go to sleep, little girl, dream your dreams, all night long.
Rest your head, calm your thoughts, soon will come
morning light.”
“Can’t you see, I am tired,
And that I want to rest.
I need sleep, just like you,
So that I’ll be my best.”
“Go to sleep, little girl, close your eyes, I will
too.
Keep this thought in your head, remember, I love you.”
This solo uses basic four mallet technique and is pretty
straight forward in that regard.
The roll section is best learned if there is some kind of a
rhythmic pulse, (sextuplet or 32nd note works well with the
slow tempo of this section.) Using this kind of a pulse will
make it easier to prepare the large interval changes required.
Slow practice at the end is important even though it seems
easy enough. All of the notes are on the bottom keyboard and
the quick shifts from one octave to another can be difficult.
