Funk No. 2                              $3.50

Funk No. 2 by Todd Ukena
(Drum set solo)

This solo is for a four piece set, bass drum, snare drum, mounted tom, and floor tom including a hi-hat and ride cymbal.   Use the following key:

Hi-hat---------  ________________
Mounted tom -  ________________
Snare drum ---  ________________
Floor tom -----  ________________
Bass drum ----  ________________

1.        Hold hi-hat cymbals together so they are barely touching for a “dirty” sounding splash with little definition for the beginning 14 measures.   Keep hi-hat cymbals tight together once the performer gets to Letter A.

2.        Holding on to rim with the right hand fingers press the right hand thumb into drum head causing the pitch of the drum to raise a whole step on notes that have the arrow pointing up from the notehead.

3.        The ‘x” notes at letter E are for:  Top space – ride cymbal played by right hand, Third space – top hi hat cymbal played with the right hand while cymbals are completely apart, and Second space – bottom hi hat cymbal played by the left hand underneath (in the style of Buddy Rich.)

(Try keeping a quarter note beat with the hi-hat on the pattern at rehearsal letter A.  The open and close hi-hat effect sounds really cool!!  Use it anytime that pattern shows up in the solo.  Keeping the quarter note beat during the section at rehearsal letter B also sounds cool. Use a hi-hat beat at letter D as well.)
