Colors by Todd Ukena
(four mallet marimba solo)

The title of this solo comes from the different tone colors achieved from the quality of the chords, (M7, m7, dim7, etc.) as well as where the chords are played on the instrument.

This was very much in the style of the show tune  ballads from Broadway in the  30s and 40s that I heard my mother play on the piano when I was quite young.   (I immediately think of the tune, “Deep Purple.”)  That is the color that comes to mind when this solo starts out.)   Now, it reminds me of my wife’s art work and all the colors she used in her pallet.

This is a good solo to start four-mallet work on a marimba.  The open or closed voicing fits easily on instrument and in the hands.  If it is possible, use a Musser roll, L.H. Stevens roll for the most of the solo.  The glissando should be played with an alternating roll that increases with speed as it rises up the keyboard but decrescendo back with a Musser, L. H. Stevens roll.  Purchase this solo now.
